Edwina was a minor character in Chicken Run. She was killed by Mrs. Tweedy-Fry at the beginning of the film as she was no longer able to lay eggs, so she was no longer useful to their cause. She ended up becoming the Tweedys' dinner.

She refused to inform her fellow hens of her infertility, either because she did not want to make them look infertile and risk their lives, or because life at the farm had made her utterly miserable that she lost all hope and so sought death as the better option.

Trivia[]

  • In the television show, Rex The Runt, also animated by Aardman, Edwina makes an unnamed cameo appearance in the twelfth episode of the second series titled "Wayne The Zebra".
  • She is a reference to British politician Edwina Currie who, as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Health in 1988, claimed that "most of the egg production in [Britain], sadly, is now affected with salmonella". The announcement caused egg sales to decline rapidly, by 60 percent, and the slaughter of four million hens. Edwina Currie was compelled to resign — or "got the chop".
  • Her death was much darker in the workprint, in it, it actually shows Mrs. Tweedy-Fry swinging the axe down towards Edwina, With Ginger looking away as she's killed off.
